Our Deanery

SS Peter and Paul is one of eight parishes within the Merton Deanery.  The parishes are:

  • SS. Peter & Paul, Mitcham
  • St. John Fisher, Merton
  • Christ the King, Wimbledon Park
  • St. Joseph’s, Colliers Wood
  • Sacred Heart, Wimbledon
  • St. Winefride’s, South Wimbledon
  • Our Lady of the Assumption, Tooting
  • St. Teresa’s, Morden

The Dean is Fr. John Mulligan, Parish Priest of St. Teresa’s, Morden

As a result of a very successful two-week mission organised in the churches and Catholic schools in the Merton Deanery in 2013, a continuing Merton Deanery Mission team was established with representatives from each parish.

This Team has organised a number of support and formation events for groups active in parishes.  For example, in 2015 Youth events were organised and also three formation sessions for those involved in the Ministry of Reading.

The following formation sessions were held in 2016.  A talk by Fr Henry Longbottam SJ on Pope Francis’s encyclical Laudato Si on 11th February and an event for Parish Prayer Groups marking the Year of Mercy, led by Fr David Stewart SJ on 16th April 2016.  Two sessions were offered for parents of Confirmation candidates in the Merton Deanery, one was led by Jenny Baker on 2nd March  in the Sacred Heart Church hall, Wimbledon and the otherwas led by David Wells on 4th May 2016 in St Teresa’s Church hall, Morden.  An event for all RCIA Graduates and Catechists in the Merton Deanery took place on 23rd May in St Teresa’s Church hall, Morden, withthe theme:: Our Rights & Duties in the Church Today.  This was led by  Dr Helen Costigane (Moral Theologian,Canon Lawyer and Vice Principal of Heythrop College).

Celebrating Confirmation – Challenges for parents today. Led by Fr Luuk Jansen on Saturday 11th March. 12noon – 1.30pm at St Teresa’s Morden.

Parish Leadership and the role of Parish Pastoral Councils  Led by Dr BridieStringer and Fr John Mulligan on Saturday 29th April 9am – 1pm at the Kairos Centre, Roehampton.  Booking required. Please contact your Parish Priest.

Understanding our own faith.  Led by Sr Nuala Gannon on Tuesdays 2nd and 9th May, 7.30 – 9.00pm at SS Peter & Paul’s, Mitcham.

The treasures of Scripture.  Led by Fr Nicholas King SJ on Tuesday 16th May,7.30 – 9.00pm at the Sacred Heart , Wimbledon

Affirming First Holy Communion Catechists. Led by Jenny Baker on Thursday 18th May, 7.30 – 9.00pm at St John Fisher, Merton.

Today’s Moral Maze: Church Teaching and Lived reality.  Led by Dr Helen Costigan on Tuesday 13th June, 7.30 – 9.00pm at St Teresa’s Morden.
